Yesterday afternoon, a two-year-old dog that was part of an Iditarod sled team died–it is the sixth reported dog death since the 1,100-mile race started on March 8 near Anchorage, Alaska.

The most recent death occurred after a plane picked up a dog team that withdrew from the race–the dog died during the flight–the cause of death has yet to be determined.

In a separate, earlier incident, two of the dogs died after their sled team was caught in a windstorm.

PETA is asking law enforcement in Alaska to open a criminal investigation into the death of all the dogs.
