Lost Signal on Beary’s Satellite Ears

Terrier ears crack me up. You know those pointy, triangular ones foxes have? Yeah, those funky ones. They turn, swivel and can perform all sorts of physical contortions including a complete 180 done independently of each ear. They even retract downward, which reminds me a bit of the Osprey’s tilt rotors during landing. Over the past several months, I’ve come to refer to Beary’s ears as his satellite ears. He’ll swivel his ears toward whichever way a particular sound strikes his fancy. If he’s sleeping and I ever so slightly whisper his name, his satellite ears will perk right up. When I’m walking him around the neighborhood, they’ll scan the vast soundscape much like a satellite dish would receive its signal from orbit. That seems to be a reflex. Unfortunately, not all signals are perceived equally. “Come here, Beary” usually gets lost amidst the wind bustling through the bushes or the commotion of a flight of birds passing above his tiny head. My rule of thumb: If I’m walking him outside, I can expect a painstakingly slow transmission rate… kind of like my lame Comcast box, ha! Bet you didn’t see that zing come.
