Last week, a Rhode Island woman pleaded guilty to animal cruelty after leaving her two pit bulls alone in her apartment for two days without food and water, and their snouts wrapped shut with electrical tape.Neighbors grew concerned when they heard the constant whimpering of the dogs from the apartment and alerted authorities.

The dogs were found with wounds on their faces from trying to remove the tape, but were OK.

The owner of the dogs, who was released on $2,000 bail, had left the dogs so that she could go to the hospital and give birth.

I should add that this woman was also ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation–I think that’s a great idea, because I have a very, very hard time trying to follow this thought process: Well, looks like I’m about to give birth, so it’s time to go to the hospital…but these two darn dogs of mine will make a lot of noise while I’m gone and I sure as heck don’t wanna bother the neighbors!

I know! Some tape should do the trick!

I think it’s fair to say that anyone accused of such unbelievable acts should never be allowed to own a pet again. Any time she tries to go to a pet store or shelter and adopt, her name should show up on an “Animal Abusers” list. How about random “check-ins” by law enforcement to make sure she doesn’t have any animals while we’re at it?

I’m thinking that’s tax money well-spent.
