Lawsuit Claims Girl Not Allowed To Play Basketball With Service Dog

A high school and Special Olympics are barring a girl with cerebral palsy from playing basketball with other disabled students, according to a federal lawsuit.

The group Equip for Equality are suing on behalf of Jennifer Youngwith–a 17-year-old who attends Community High School in West Chicago.

She uses a service dog named Simba to carry a four-pound oxygen tank she needs. The girl’s mother says Special Olympics has said only that it’s “not appropriate” for Jennifer to be on the basketball court with the dog or the oxygen tank.

The school district’s attorneys are reviewing the complaint.
