The Dog with the Velvet Voice

barry whiteWe named Beary White before meeting him. Naming Bear was the result of a casual brainstorm session between my brother Nick, Mike and I. We thought of the name Beary because of its reference to a cute and cuddly teddy bear and then added the Y because I love two syllables for a dog name. Nick jokingly said, “And since he is white, you can call him Beary White.” Yes! We loved it. Beary White spelled B-E-A-R-Y, like a bear, would be our new puppy’s name.

Plus, the fact that Beary shares his name with the late, great legendary soul artist Barry White, is fun for us. Whether Beary meets the vet, groomer, strangers or friends, everyone gets a kick when they hear his name. Most people my age recognize Barry White from the 90’s TV show Ally McBeal, where a character named John sings to White’s music in the bathroom to rev up his self-esteem.

Barry White was also known as “The Man with the Velvet Voice.” I like that. Our Beary White goes by other names, including Care Bear, Bear, CuddleBear, Little Bunny, My Crazy Little Monkey, Chomper and Stinky Butt.
