Review: Doggles–Sunglasses For Dogs

kona_doggles1.jpgWhen I first saw an ad for “Doggles” – posh sun glasses for pampered pooches, I promised myself that I would NEVER make my poor boxer wear anything that ridiculous.

Then a few months later, we stumbled upon a little boutique that was going out of business. All of their merchandise was $10 and under and they just so happened to have one more pair of brown Doggles for a big dog. I tried to fight off the urge buy them. I really did – but it was no use. Ten minutes later, Kona Bear had his first pair of sunglasses.

About Doggles:
Doggles are protective eyewear for dogs. They are actually goggles for dogs, hence the name. Unlike ordinary sunglasses for dogs, Doggles actually protect dog’s eyes from foreign objects, wind, and UV light.

What do Doggles look like?
They are modeled after sports goggles. We currently have 2 styles of Doggles, fitting dogs three pounds to 250 pounds. All models have flexible, snug-fitting frames, which have foam padding against the face; polycarbonate (shatterproof) and anti-fog lenses; and adjustable elastic head and chin straps to keep the Doggles securely on the dog.

Doggles ILS feature patented wide nose bridge, deep lens cup, interchangeable lenses. Dogs have a much wider nose bridge than humans, along with protruding eyes. You need a goggle designed specifically to fit a dog’s unique face structure.

Our Review:

Surprisingly, the Doggles were really easy to put on. It was keeping them on that was the hard part. Each pair comes with two straps – one goes under their chin and the other one goes behind their head. We were able to slip them onto Kona pretty easily.

Of course he immediately started bucking like a little bronco and tried to pull them off with his paws. I felt bad for him so I took them off. While he was “recovering” (He’s such a drama queen!) I started reading the little instructions that came with the doggles to see if they had any tips for keeping on.kona_beach.jpg

That’s when I learned that you’re supposed to take them outside to put them on, so that they learn that they are actually there to help them see better in the sunlight. I took Kona outside and put them back on. He instinctively started pawing at his face and then stopped dead in his tracks. I couldn’t help but laugh as he casually checked out his surroundings. It was like he could finally see things clearly for the first time.

He started sniffing the bushes as if he never noticed they were there before. We took a little stroll and I don’t know if it was my imagination, but he seemed to have a little more spring in his steps. What a dork.

All in all, we give Doggles an A+. They’re cute, easy to put on and a great way to protect your pooch from UV rays. Just a little side note though: Make sure you keep your dog from looking directly at the sun. Once Kona realized the Doggles shaded his eyes from the light he couldn’t stop staring at the bright yellow ball in the sky.
