Dog of the Day: Jewels from Greenhill Humane Society!

jewels.jpg

Jewels is an adorable 2 1/2 year old pitbull/Italian Greyhound mix who is ready to find a loving family to call her own! She is a well-mannered, easygoing lady who loves to play with other dogs and has even lived with cats. Some of her favorite activities are going for walks, getting belly rubs and being showered with attention.

She came to Greenhill with two hurt knees. After being evaluated it was discovered that she had a torn cranial cruciate ligament in both of her knees. Cranial cruciate ligament injury is a very common orthopedic injury in active dogs, equivalent to an “ACL tear” in human athletes. Surgical repair of the injury is the gold standard of treatment.

Jewels has already had a TPLO (tibial plateau leveling) surgery performed by OVRA (Oregon Veterinary Referral Associates) to fix one knee. After complete recovery (about 4 months) she will be able to be just as active on that leg as before and should live out her life like a normal dog.

Jewels is currently recovering from the first surgery and still has the injury of the other knee; that is why she has a little bit of a funny walk (and fur shaved) on that leg. She will need the same surgery performed on her second hurt knee, which will be included in her adoption. It is common to do one leg, wait 4-8 weeks for recovery, and then do the other leg’s surgery.

If you are interested in Jewels becoming the newest member of your family you can come meet her in the kennel at Greenhill Humane Society. The kennel staff will be happy to answer any questions you have about her treatment plan. You can also call (541) 689-1503 for more information on adopting Jewels.
