A Street Light Powered By Dog Poop!

An uber-smart MIT grad student came up with the concept for the “Park Spark” poop converter–the result: A street light powered by dog poop.

He obtained a $4,000 grant and assembled two steel, 500-gallon oil tanks, painted them a bright yellow, connected them with diagonal black pipes and hooked them up to an old-fashioned lamppost. Signs on the tanks tell dog owners to use the supplied biodegradable bags, deposit the dog waste and then turn a wheel to stir the contents into the other waste and water in the tank. Microbes break down the waste, producing methane gas, which goes through the tanks to power the light.

Another plus is that the Park Spark is actually attractive: Some dog park visitors initially think it’s modern art.
