AKC to Allow Mixed Breed Dogs to Compete in Select Events
So you might not be seeing Mitzi the Jack Russell/Australian Cattle Dog/Basset Hound mix prancing with her owner around the ring of the next Best in Show competition, but there’s still some good news for mixed-breed pooches and their owners.
The American Kennel Club has decided to allow mixed-breed dogs to compete in agility, obedience and rally events. There is, of course, a catch: Mixed-breed dogs can only compete against other “mutts,” and they’ll still be barred from competing in the most prestigious competitions.
Many dog owners continue to be frustrated by the AKC’s policies against against their beloved mutts, feeling that the AKC is simply throwing them a bone by allowing them to compete in only certain events.
Competitions for mixed-breed dogs will begin in April, 2010. To compete, owners must pay a $35 program fee and must make sure their dog is spayed or neutered and up-to-date on all shots.
