Indiana Puppy Mill Bill Heads to Senate

In response to a growing problem across the state, a proposed legislation would add limitations and requirements to dog breeders.

Commercial dog breeders would be required to have no more than 30 adult dogs that are not spayed or neutered.

In addition, breeders would be required to give dogs sanitary living conditions and at least one hour of exercise per day.

According to the Indiana state director for the Humane Society of the United States, the bill is focused on large-scale breeders that breed hundreds of puppies–small, reputable breeders would not be affected.

The legislation has already passed through the House with a 81-14 vote, and now heads to the Senate.
