Greetings Avenue K-Niners!

First of all, I would like to start off by saying that we are so excited to be here. My boyfriend Justin and I are owned by a 2-year-old fawn male boxer named Kona Bear. He is, by far, the nuttiest dog I have ever met. We are 99.9% sure he is some kind of wild chimpanzee trapped in a dog’s body. We got Kona when he was 8 weeks old and he’s been the center of our universe since.

The first time we took him out in public, this lady told us, “Having a boxer is like having a hyper toddler covered in fur… except they never grow out of it.”

Boy was she right! In human years, he’s the equivalent of a teenager, but he runs around and bounces off the wall like a little kid. It’s like being the owner of a spastic kangaroo on Prozac. We love that goober to death though and wouldn’t change a thing about him.

So anyways, as the days go by I am sure we will have a TON of stories about Kona, but I thought I’d start this first blog about a recent experience we had at the dog park.
Over the last few months, we’ve been working with Kona on proper dog park etiquette. For a while, he was having some major issues with any dog that would try to hump him. Even though we knew it was instinctive behavior for him to protect himself, we didn’t want him to start thinking that it was okay for him to be aggressive. So, we’ve been teaching him to back down every time another dog would try to start a scuffle.

Well I guess all of that training really got to his head because the other day he was wrestling with this Weimaraner puppy, when it decided to pick him up by the harness and drag him in circles through the dirt. It was the funniest and saddest thing I have ever seen. Here was this adorable little grey puppy dragging all 67 lbs of boxer across the field and Kona didn’t do a thing!

Needless to say, I had to tell Kona to get him and stand up for himself before he’d have permanent road burn on his furry little butt. Guess we’re still gonna have to work on finding that balance between cocky, tough guy and dog park wuss bag.
