Beary on Cloud 9 at Pooch Park

Playing at the local dog park has become our new favorite weekend hobby. I’ve visited a few dog beaches in San Diego, but never a dog park, and never in NorCal, so I didn’t know what to expect.

On our first trip to the pooch park, we walk with our friends Sara, Tyler and their dogs Jack, a golden lab, and Kaya, who I’m sorry, I don’t know her breed. We think she’s a border-collie mix and we call her princess Kaya because she’s a super-cool chic. Anyway, we’re off to the park. It’s a gated grassy area about the size of a baseball field. (Mike thinks it’s longer). Inside there are probably about 10 dogs with their respective owners socializing on the sidelines.

I let Beary off his leash and he enters dog heaven or something quite close. Mike and I no longer exist in his world. He’s all about the dogs. Immediately a fair amount of butt sniffing commences: “Who are you? What did you eat today? Do I know you?” Sara throws a tennis ball and Jack, Kaya and Beary are off to the races. Our little westie can hang with the big dogs like the best of ‘em. His tongue is flapping, ears back and feet racing. Mike and I smile — our baby is happy.

Dog Park Pros:

Beary can run off his leash without fear that he’s headed to the street.

We get to play with a variety of pups, from a welsh corgi and a golden retriever to a basset hound and a shibu inu puppy, who is effortlessly adorable.

Water is plentiful, with a dog-person combo fountain.

People are responsible and clean up after their dogs. Bags are provided.

Beary is on cloud nine chasing the pups.

I don’t really have any cons. The park is a bit on the small side, but I don’t want to complain. I’m happy we found it! For more information about Laguna Community Dog Park, visit http://www.yourcsd.com/parks/parks_dog.asp.
